strip-stool

scrapwood and steel

32x32x48,5 cm

Fascinated by the challenge of giving strength to strip metal as the structure framework for furniture, he had never successfully made a design in accordance with the genuine qualities of the material. The challenge was to develop an idea that would best transform the material into a new product of honest construction. Strips alone are too flexible to support the human body and it is by folding or bending the metal that one achieves strength, as he explored in some of his earlier trials. Many years later, he was struck by the solution. Simply, the strips of raw construction metal needed only to be slightly bent lenghthways, adding a new axis of rigidity to prevent any warping from occurring with the addition of weight. Using this technique, he developed stackable stools and chairs as well as table designs-transforming this common yet appealing material into something special.
