August 18 th 2011 DDW One year down the line

When the DDW starts on 22 October 2011, it will be exactly one year ago to the day that we opened our doors to the public for the first time. It feels like yesterday…. The visitors were walking around here as if they had never done anything else but walk across floors whose formwork had just been removed, past walls that were still wet with paint, and through doors that had been hung only one day earlier.  There was even heating here and there and, in the restaurant, the first flame was lit on the cooker at 10:55 (we opened at 11 o’clock). The workshop was empty of machinery and resembled a war area, since we had flung down everything we needed to store. So the visitors were walking around completely unaware that we had more or less reached the end of our rope and were ten kilos lighter.
Today, 12 months later, we’ve managed to drag ourselves through countless obstacles and from deadline to deadline, put into use the one room after the other, the machines are now running at maximum capacity and all the junk is being slowly cleaned up, the shop, showroom and gallery are continuously being updated and we even have ventilation in the restaurant. Everything is looking better and better and the people just keep coming. Those ten kilos are back and, for the next edition, the complex will be crammed with exhibitions, presentations, lectures, live radio, parties and much, much more.
